The Roman baths and since we couldn't go swimming in the baths we went swimming in the Public swimming pool.

Friday 18th July 2008

Today we went to the famous Roman Baths in Bath. They are the most historic and the most amazing things that I think the Choir has seen. There were dozens of areas where the pools were and one was a room with a holographic projection on the wall. If at the same time you notice the water, you see what appears to be ripples but the effect is produced by coins on the bottom. Since we weren’t allowed to go swimming in the Roman Baths, we decided to have our lunch in the park and go for a swim in the swimming pools instead. At about 5:00pm we started to head back to the Youth Hostel.

Saturday 19th July 2008

Today we went for an enormous walk from the Hostel and walked all the way down to the Abbey then up a big hill to the Circus. The Circus is a circle of houses with trees in the middle around the Royal Crescent. The Royal Crescent is made of houses arranged in the shape of a crescent moon. It is an extremely intriguing design. We then went back down to the park for lunch and back to the Abbey to practice for Evensong.

Sunday 20th July 2008

Today we had two services. The first one was the Eucharist at 11:00am. In between the services we went and had lunch at the park again for the last time, We all ran around, well most of us did. Then we went to Putney Bridge, which is one of three bridges that have shops on both sides of the Bridge. There was a shop on the corner which was filled with Paddington Bears and much, much, MUCH more! At 3:30pm we had the Evensong service then we went back to the Hostel to play games.

Half the UK (and France) seemed to be in Oxford on the weekend, and those not shopping were on the road to Blenheim Palace. Unfortunately this meant the bus turned back after a couple of hours battling the traffic and the boys missed the tour and maze. On the positive side the weather was fantastic and summer in full swing.

The Dean of Christ Church Cathedral Oxford held a reception for the tour party after the Friday service, so Ladies, Men and boys all dressed up for the occasion.

The reception was held in the Dean's Garden which has a bit of history, and my translation of the story he told the boys is:

A previous Dean had a daughter called Alice who could see into the neighbour's garden from her upstairs bedroom. Of course that garden looked more interesting than her own, and she used to try and gain access via a (small) door in the wall between the gardens. Lewis Caroll was a friend of the Dean, and this was the inspriation for Alice in Wonderland, which he apparently wrote sitting in the garden.

The boys then (unsuccessfully) searched the garden for the College's missing tortoise which had just come last in the inter college tortoise race - which according to the dean this is the correct position for a tortoise to come in a race.

Chris D

We (my son Josh and I) tagged along the choir tour from Bath to Cambridge and then to Oxford. When we caught up with the choir in their accommodations, the boys all seemed relaxed and in very good spirits. That accommodation in Bath YHA with its surrounding gardens allowed the boys to be able to ‘goof off’ a bit and have a free ‘down time.’

In Bath, the choir sang an evensong on July 19th and then a choral matins and evensong on July 20th. Located in the middle of the city and next to the old Roman baths, Bath Abbey is ornate church with its flying arches reminiscent of a Notre Dame in Paris. The Saturday evensong was officiated by the vicar of Bath who welcomed the Christchurch Cathedral Choir. The choir sang magnificently and the acoustic of the abbey church really worked with the voices of our choir. Compliments and praises were heard from church-goers after the service.

With tourist season in full swing, choral matins on the 20th was very well attended. Again, the choir performed magnificently and was well received by the congregation. After the morning service, the choir managed to have some time to go around Bath city centre and have lunch in time for the evensong later in the day.

We met the choir again on the 21st as they drove into Cambridge from Bath. The choir arrived in this lovely university town at 2pm. In Cambridge, they were hosted by Corpus Christi College which gave them the use of their visitors’ lodge just walking distance from the College itself. The choir has full use of the facilities as they were the only group using the building. The lovely front yard allowed the boys to play soccer,
rugby and cricket waiting for their room assignments.

With the housekeeping in order, the choir walked to King’s College to tour the chapel and the college grounds. Almost all of the colleges in Cambridge charges for admission to tour the grounds. We got in as part of the choir touring group.

King’s College and the Chapel is an impressive sight. Founded originally as a college to admit and educate graduates of Eton College, the college grounds is well-manicured and features in a lot of Cambridge brochures and
postcards. The grounds were so well kept that one gentlemen of the choir commented that the “lawn maintenance programme is outstanding.” Besides the impressive ground, the Chapel is equally impressive if not magnificent. The choir toured the interior of the chapel and soaked in the ambience. The tallest fan vault ceiling can be found here and a beautiful screen given by Henry VIII is here as well. Brian Law told the boys that King’s College chapel is the place where “Once in Royal David’s City” was first sung in public.

After the public tour closed for the day, the choir had an informal performance. They sang “Once in Royal David’s City” which was enjoyed by some tourists that hang around just shortly after closing of the chapel for tours. They then went to the choir stall and sang several more pieces to our enjoyment. The voice of the choir resonated through the whole chapel. Indeed, it gave me goosebumps just recalling the wonderful “alleluias” that reverberated throughout this beautiful chapel. Too bad that other people did not get to see our world-class choir sing.

On the 22nd, the boys had some leisure time around Cambridge and enjoy the sights. They even had time to try their skills punting on the River Cam. According to some of the kids, they are actually quite proficient. I am happy to report that nobody fell into the river. Everybody had a fun time.

Later in the afternoon, they began their 3:00pm practice for the evensong at St John’s College chapel. St John’s College is a five minute walk from King’s College. While the exterior of St John’s Chapel is relatively less imposing than that of King’s College Chapel, the interior décor is definitely more ornate. The choir practiced till fifteen minutes from evensong. The evensong was quite well attended with church-goers filling in stalls next to the choir stalls. Several attendees have been to Christchurch before and wanted to hear our choir sing. One elderly attendee was born and raised in Christchurch and wanted to attend to hear his ‘hometown’ choir sing. As usual, the choir sang magnificently with their voices resonating through the whole chapel. After service, I overheard an American tourist (who apparently is a choir director) heaping praises on the quality of our choir.

On the 23rd, the choir went arrived in Oxford and was housed at the Christchurch Cathedral Choir school. The gentlemen where housed at Christ Church College. Christ Church College dining hall is the location used for the Harry Potter movies. Some of the boys recognised it immediately and began touching the walls (probably hoping they will turn into wizards!). Julian said that the choir was assigned the tables where the Slytherins sat.

After lunch at the college dining hall, the boys went to Coventry to sing at evensong at the Coventry Cathedral. Coventry Cathedral is an interesting site as a modern cathedral was built next to the bombed out remains of the original cathedral. The modern cathedral had some very beautiful stained glass windows that depict Jesus’ life as well as various saints. The choir sang very well during the evensong though there where relatively few church-goers during this weekday evensong. The choir grabbed dinner in a local restaurant before heading back to Oxford.

On the 24th, the choir had a chance to explore the Cotswold on their way to Tewkesbury Abbey church. The boys enjoyed their time at the Cotswold and saw old English country towns preserved as if time stood still. At Tewkesbury Abbey, the boys practiced an hour before evensong which was enjoyed by many tourists visiting this old Benedictine Monastery. The Abbey service was well attended and the choir sang magnificently as they went through their Magnificat and Nunc Dimittis. After the service, the priest thanked the choir for sharing their ministry of music.

On the 25th, the boys had a free day to enjoy Oxford and the surrounding areas. We said goodbye to the boys and drove back to London to catch our plane to return home.

The choir has done very well throughout the week that we were with them. The boys are in very good spirits and are really enjoying themselves. The choir should be proud of themselves. They have really represented the cathedral, our city, and their school very well.

The longest traveling day in England is coming up on this long tour of England, Oxford.

Wednesday 23rd July 2008

Today we traveled from Cambridge to Oxford which took 3 to 4 hours and then we had to travel to Coventry to sing the service. That took another 2 to 3 hours to get there plus another 5 to 10 minutes to find a park for the bus. When the bus was finally parked, we had some time to look around the Cathedral and take photos. It was very interesting for us to hear the echo in the Cathedral, much louder than the echo in our Cathedral. Afterwards we went out for dinner at a Bar / Restaurant followed by another 2 to 3 hour trip back to Oxford. By that stage it was 9:30pm and guess what…it was straight to bed!

Note: today was the longest traveling day with a total of 10 hours.

Thursday 24th July 2008

Today we went for a 'Deluxe Extended Tour' from Oxford to Tewkesbury. On the tour we saw 'Burton on the water', 'Stow on the Wold' and another one, which just doesn’t seem to be there at the moment. On the way we stopped and had lunch at 'Burton on the water' which is a lovely place. We then continued on the road to Tewkesbury. When we got there we had a bit of a run around before we went inside for a look around, a practise and then a service. Afterwards we had Fish ’n Chips on the green and played cricket against a 900-year-old wall. Then we traveled all the way back to Oxford.

Friday 25th July 2008

Today we had an early start and headed off to Blenheim Palace but there was horrible traffic backed up for miles and miles. It took us 3 hours to go 6 miles so after 3hours of waiting we 'pulled the plug' and turned around to head back home. Instead of going to Blenheim palace we ended up playing for a couple of hours instead then it was off to the Cathedral to sing a service. Not the most interesting day.

Saturday 26th July 2008

On Saturday we had a well-deserved free day on which we traveled a small distance away from Oxford to a farm owned by friends of Mr and Mrs Rutter. We spent the day relaxing and playing games. During the course of the day we rode horses, ate a very large and filling BBQ lunch, played guitar hero on a Play station and played Mr Rutter's 'The Choir' Game in which we ran around the garden following an unknown trail of song names and song composers of our music library. The game was won by Michael with Henry coming a split-second behind and Jonathon third. This was a very nourishing day and set us in good spirits for the days to come. (This Paragraph was by Michael Hall due to the fact that I was away with my cousins).

Sunday 27th July 2008

We went for a service at Christ Church Cathedral Oxford but before we headed to the Cathedral we went and had breakfast with Harry Potter Just kidding, we went to the hall where he had his meals. This is the dining room used in the Harry Potter movies. While there the preacher, the one who lead the service, kept saying - “I won’t go to far with this but the people from the land of the 'Lord of the Rings' came over to the land of 'Harry Potter' ”. We then could choose between walking around or staying at the school house before going off to evensong at 6:00pm.

Monday 21st July 2008

Today, on our last day in Bath, we had an early breakfast and in no time whatsoever we were on the road and heading to Corpus Christi College, Cambridge, where we will be staying for two nights. We were on the road for roughly 4 and a quarter hours. That included a toilet stop and a lunch stop. We played games in the park for a bit to release 3 hours of being cramped in a bus together. Then we were back on the road and for some reason we skimmed the outside of London to get to Cambridge. When we got there we went to Corpus Christi College, Newnham House, where students going to University go to study, rest and just be close to the school. We then went to Kings College Cathedral and sang once the Cathedral had shut so we could hear the acoustics.

Tuesday 22nd July 2008

Today we went to have breakfast at Christi College’s dinning hall where some of the students (probably boarders) came to have breakfast in far greater numbers than ours. Afterwards we went on a detour around the river where we found a punt and canoe hire place. It came down to a vote, either we went punting or we didn’t - the vote went in favour of punting but everyone who said 'no' to punting enjoyed it just as much as the rest of us. Some punters zig-zaged down the river, some thought it would be best to push their pole into the ground and get it entangled in the overhead branches.

Afterwards each group went their own way until after Lunch, because Mr Law, the law told us we all had to have a couple of hours sleep. Some did and some didn’t. One and a quarter hours before the service, we went to have a practice for the service. After the service we went and had dinner at the Christi College Dining hall.

Choir Tour - a parents view

Several choir parents are following the tour and we are fortunate that one has access to a computer....

Greetings from the UK - we feel like chorister groupies after dropping in and out of the tour over the Wells and Bath and Cambridge legs of the trip. Not that we are alone however with Cushla and Isabella, Alex and Josh, and new arrivals Sarah, Wayne and Grace all over at the moment.

The cities visited have all been stunning - even with jet lag and summer crowds, impossible not to be amazed by the architecture and beauty. Not sure how much of this is getting through to the boys, but did hear a few comments about the amazing cathedrals, so some are obviously noticing it.

The Choir was excellent at Wells. It is a huge cathedral but evensong is held in a separate area with everyone sitting in the stalls around the choir - so a lot more intimate than the usual experience. Crowd of 30 or so and comments from locals were that choir is as good as anything they had seen - so a great way to start the UK leg of the trip.

We didn't do the trip to Christchurch, but a few of the boys had travel sickness courtesy of the windy roads. Didn't seem to affect singing though which apparently went very well.

All seemed pleased to get to Bath and 4 nights in one spot. The Youth hostel was at the top of a hill overlooking Bath and had great grounds for the boys to play spotlight, bullrush etc. Comments from a few of the boys about the food being good - in England, so all well on that front as well. The option of cooked breakfasts going down well with many. Lots of washing/drying/shoe cleaning/ironing etc each time we arrive, so all the carers are all very busy.

The Bath Cathedral service on Saturday was excellent - and there was noticeably more energy around after the day off spent visiting Roman Baths, and swimming on the Friday.

Just caught up with the tour again after a few days away. Boys seem good, and based on the detailed description I was given of breakfast at Corpus Christi College, all still looking good on the food front. The group apparently mastered the art of punting today - Possibly the best day of summer so far, so a good day for it. The evensong was at St Johns College, and was once again lovely - about 50 in the stalls for the service.

No pictures of the punting unfortunately, but there are a lot of cameras on tour so sure there will be plenty to look at when the boys get home. Here are a few pictures until then.

Cheers Chris Doyle

Monday 14 July and Tuesday 15 July 2008:

We flew from San Francisco (a most wonderful place) into Los Angeles (Hollywood) a 1 and a half hour flight, which was one of the smoothest flights yet. Then we had to travel from the Domestic…… to the International airport and wait until we could check into the Airport and go through customs. They are so fussy they even make you take off your shoes so they can check that you aren’t smuggling things into the country or something. After we put our shoes back on Mr Law, Chris and most of the Mums told us all to write up our diaries, that didn’t take long if you had all ready started to write it up that is. Now it’s off to England which will take 9 HOURS just to get there. I bet just about everyone went to sleep this time but one or two played games. When we got off the plane in London we had to go through customs again (sigh). Then we were on the road - much better than on the plane. When we got to our Hostel it was the loveliest little cottage you have ever seen. We spent the rest of the day playing games outside from 5pm onwards.

Wednesday 16 July 2008:

We went to the market just outside Wells Cathedral to buy some gifts, souvenirs or presents, whatever you like to call them. After we bought some things from the market we wandered around Wells, saw very interesting things, old buildings, old shops and lots lots more. At about 12:00 we went back to the Cathedral and had our lunch outside on the green, everyone played tag and then BULLRUSH!!! After we had finished we went inside to have a look around, took some photos and then we went out into the vestry to practice for the service. After the service had ended we drove back to Cheddar for dinner and, more importantly, sleep.

Thursday 17 July 2008

We checked out of Cheddar and travelled down to Christchurch !! That’s right everyone, we’re coming home…well not just yet anyway. But we did go to Christchurch England, the sister city of Christchurch NZ, to sing a concert but to get there it was a hazardous 3 hour drive. After the concert we walked down to the docks to eat lunch. We saw dozens of swans and little cygnets all around the docks. Afterwards we played soccer for 30 minutes and then we hit the road again. It was another 2hour drive up to Bath - the home of the Roman Baths. When we got to the Hostel we played until dinner and then it was straight to bed.

Hi everyone,

We flew domestic from Christchurch to Auckland to catch our international flight, everyone was wide awake. When we got on the San Francisco flight there were games and/or movies and/or sleeping on offer but no one was very interested in the sleeping part, every one was playing games and watching movies. When we got to San Francisco, we transfered to our hotel to put our bags down and then went to the wharf to get on a cruise.

We circled around the Golden Gate Bridge and Alcatraz to wear off the jet lag then onto a seafood restaurant for dinner. Then it was back to the hostel and bed after a long day.

Today we had a deluxe San Francisco Tour over the Golden Gate bridge and around the city. For lunch we went to 'Jack in the Box' a burger restaurant and then travelled to Grace Cathedral where we explored and had a practice. Afterwards we went to a food complex for dinner and had pizza and sandwiches with ice cream to follow. Then it was back to the hostel and bed.

Sunday, we got up all refreshed and ready for a new day. Everyone went to the Grace Cathedral to sing two services one in the morning and one in the evening. In between the services we went to have lunch and have a look at the cathedrals gift shop to buy souvenir's. After the service we had free time and a proper dinner??? Then we packed our bags and went to bed (not yet).

News flash Mr Oldhams boys sing out of window to homeless!

Everyone says hi!!!

The ChristChurch Cathedral Choir flew out of Christchurch to begin their world tour on Friday July 11th after singing a beautiful farewell to all the family, friends and well-wishers who had gathered to farewell them.

It was great to see some many family, friends and well-wishers at the airport on Friday afternoon. We were all treated to one last song before the choir went through the check-in to await boarding their plane for Auckland.

They arrived safe and sound in San Francisco after a good flight and have already enjoyed a harbour cruise, dinner at a restaurant at Fisherman's Wharf followed by an early night. Apparently there was not much sleeping done on the plane.

An unusual memento of Sir Ed Hillary's last trip to Antarctica is about to be auctioned to help a Christchurch choir sing at Westminster Abbey.

An unusual memento of Sir Ed Hillary's last trip to Antarctica is about to be auctioned to help a Christchurch choir sing at Westminster Abbey.

A 125-year old piece of Welsh slate from the ChristChurch Cathedral roof was autographed by Sir Ed during the 50th anniversary celebrations of Scott Base in January 2007. It is one of three autographed at the time.

The slate is being auctioned to raise funds for the ChristChurch Cathedral Choir, which leaves on July 11 to tour England for a month. The choir of 16 boys and 12 men will take up invitations to sing in eight different cathedrals, including a week at Westminster Abbey.

Cathedral administrator Chris Oldham says the slate was removed from the Cathedral roof during refurbishment.

"Thousands of slates were removed, but this one has a special story," he says. "Just as Sir Ed realised his dream of standing on top of the world, we are offering his signed slate to help the choir realise its dream of singing at Westminster Abbey."

"We are aware some overseas collectors are interested in this historic piece, so have decided to auction it on e-Bay. We will list it in the next couple of days."
